Installing Later Model Bucket Seats in a 65 Fastback |
Then .... and now: |

I'm not exactly sure
what seats these are from. I'm guessing early to mid 80s
Mustang. Not sure if they are GT or not. They are what are
typically referred to as "Halo" seats because of the round open
headrest. These particular seats have a webbing inside the headrest.
I picked them up at a swap meet. The black vinyl along the sides was perfect, but the gray cloth inserts were shot. Here is a picture when I brought them home from the trim shop after having the insert replaced with black satin vinyl.. |

All Mustang bucket
seats will fit an early Mustang, at least that's what I've been told.
So during my years of cruising the swap meets, I was always looking
preferably for high back Mustang seats. My first choice was a set of
69-70 Mach 1 seats, but those holding Mach 1 seats know what they are
worth. I think these are just as nice.

The actual
installation was relatively easy. The track width of these mid-80s
seats was exactly the same as my 65 seats. The only drilling was to
attach the 65 seat tracks front to back, as the 65 tracks were slightly
shorter than the new seat. This allowed me to drill new holes in the
seat frame 1 1/4" forward, allowing the seat to sit farther
back. The underside of the frame had to be reinforced where the
track attach point was moved due to the thinner frame areas. This
was done with 1/8" x 1" steel strips and use of Grade 8 bolts.
Rebuild the seat tracks while you're at it. Diss-assemble, clean, and grease with white lithium grease for smooth operation. |

Photo at left shows the new seat in comparison to original. The seats are slightly higher in the bottom frame, making it a little tighter to get under the wheel. The comfort and shoulder support make up for it. |
