Alternative
to in-line Exterior pump configuration
(Spring 2012)
|
I'd been running the
dual fuel pump with holding tank setup on
my 65 for probably six or so years and
have had no issues with it.
Absolutely flawless. Never left me
stranded, never clogged, never sucked
air..etc. So, that being said, I
still highly recommend that setup for
anyone doing the EFI modification.
This year I decided to clean up and
undercoat the bottom of my 65, and wanted
to 'declutter' the installation. it
worked fine and looked functional, but
there is a lot of 'stuff' hanging down
behind the rear end and I wanted to see if
I could make this work.
Here you see the new gas tank, with the
new fuel pump location drawn in. I
still have the old tank and will use it
for parts.

Using a hold saw, I cut out the
opening. I believe it is 3". The
hole needs to clear the inner lip of the
ring fitting to be installed.
Then I took various vice grips,
hammer/dolly, etc and tried to flatten out
the lip area around the opening. This
needs to be about 3/4" all around the hole
loction..

Here are photos of the
old tank, I was using it to check fit the
dimensions of the tray and fitting so that I
could slide it into the new tank.
I removed the old tank, drained the fuel,
and washed out with soapy water. The
old tank came in quite handy because I used
the sending unit attachment ring and old
sending unit as the basis for the new fuel
pump mounting.
Here I'm test fitting components to
determine sizes of tray and legs that will
fit throught he hole.

I decided to make the height adjustable
once inside the tank, so the vertical
extensions are slotted and bolt
together. The support ring was cut
from 1/4" plate aluminum and drilled/tapped
to accept the uper attach flange that will
mount on the outside of the tank.
Here the upper ring is test fit.
This was cut from the old tank and trimmed
to have about 5/8" steel around the arrach
ring.

Once the tank tray, vertical
extensions,and inner/outer mounting flange
are established, then old sending unit is
adapted to mount the stock fox mustang fuel
pump.
Assembly:
- The
entire assembly frame assembly is
placed into the tank, and
assemblned inside
- The aluminum ring is
slotted so that it can be slipped
into the smaller hold of the tank
- Once assembled, the fuel
pump can be inserted and clamped
in place with standard fuel sender
rubber ring and ring clamp.

Photos showing the finished installation.
A cork gasket was installed between the upper mount
and the tank upper surface, as well as sealing with
Permatex. the 1/4" bolts also received a light
touch of sealant to avoid any escaping fumes.
The photos do not show the wiring very
well. The original stud shown became the
ground, while a separate power wire was inserted
through the sending unit. Both pick up
existing wiring.
On the 65, the trunk floor was raised level to
the side panels. brackets were mounted over
the tank and a new wooden subfloor covers all this
nice work....
