Magnaflow Stainless Steel 2 1/2" Exhaust System |
Routing: |
Time for a new exhaust system. The previous one was on the car when I got it and was sorely lacking. It was 2" rusted pipe with poor quality mufflers. The routing over the diff was awful. The exhaust exited strait out the back with two rusted chrome tips that were uneven. It was quite an eyesore. The new system was installed by Grave's Custom Muffler locally, and I think they did an excellent job. The 2.5" all aluminized piping picked up at the header collectors and was bent to fit closely around the T-5 transmission mount, and the H pipe was installed just behind The system is very tight; although they used only 4 hangars. The overall clearance for the car has improved. |
Mufflers: |
I ordered the
mufflers separately from A-1 Performance and took them to the Grave's for installation.
They are Magnaflow Stainless Steel units P/N 14326, and are 4" x 9"
wide x18"
long. They tuck nicely up into the pocket under the rear seat.
Note how the new exhaust pipes fit up in the tunnel. The old system I had was about 1.5" lower. These mufflers have a deep rich tone, and the engine definitely runs and sounds better. A recent article in Mustangs and Fords compared Magnaflows, Flowmasters, Edlebrock, and Midas mufflers for horsepower affect and sound levels. The Midas were the most quiet, however reduced horsepower by 12hp. The Magnaflows were the quietest of the aftermarkets, with no appreciable impact on horsepower. Flowmasters are slightly louder with no difference in horsepower. |

Note how the mufflers are 'hung' close to the floorpan, and are attached to the rear of the pan behind and under the rear seat. The rear seat was removed and hangars installed to support the mufflers. This is a factory configuration on GTs, but there were no provisions in the original six cylinder car. Special concern should be taken around the brake lines. In this photo, you can see the location of the pipes relative to the drive shaft, as well as the installed H pipe. The far right photo shows the tubes coming up along the sides of the gas tank, then turning down. I know this is not a standard tailpipe exit, but I felt it looked best for my car.
